Hemnskjela

Hemnskjela is covered with traces of World War II. In no other community along this part of the coast was the impact of the occupation as noticeable as on Hemnskjela. Visit our War Memorial Exhibition or have a look at the many remnants of war on your own.

More than 700 German soldiers and some 100 prisoners of war inhabited the small island from May 1941. Hemnskjela turned into a vast fortification with several heavy gun emplacements, bunkers, and many other buildings.

Opening hours

The War Mermorial museum at Hemnskjela is only open for guided tours in the summer.
